  DEFINATIONS OF INTERSTITIAL CYSTITIS

Definitions of   interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome

India definition
- pelvic pain or discomfort (pressure, burning, throbbing etc) of at least 1 months duration in the absence of definable pathology  with one  or more of the following.
» Symptoms increase with bladder filling and/or decrease with urination
» Associated with frequency
» Associated with urgency

Comments- in my experience we can diagnose all the case of IC using this definition.

Miami definition( International Consensus Definition)-An unpleasant sensation(pain, pressure ,discomfort) perceived to be related to urinary bladder, associated with lower urinary tract symptoms of more than six weeks duration, in the absence of infection or other identifiable causes.

Comments- The word perceived in this definition is not clear. I am not sure if the patient perceives it or the physician perceives it . How one perceives it to be related to bladder is not very clear? I am a member of this international consensus group.

ESSIC definition-BPS/IC would be diagnosed on the basis of chronic pelvic pain , pressure or discomfort perceived to be related to the urinary bladder accompanied by at least one other urinary symptom like persistent urge  to void or urinary frequency . confusable disease as a cause to be excluded.

Comments-  The word perceived in this definition is not clear. Persistent urge to void is also not very clear. I think that very few patients of IC have persistent urge.

US definition-IC/PBS
is defined by pelvic pain pressure or discomfort related to bladder , typically associated with persistent urge to void or urinary frequency, in the absence of infection or other pathology.

COMMENT- the term related to bladder is not explained. The trouble with persistent urge   remains.
PAINFUL BLADDER SYNDROME.(ICS definition 2002)Painful bladder syndrome is the complaint of suprapubicpain related to bladder filling, accompanied by other symptoms, such as increased daytime and night-time frequency, in the absence of proven urinary infection or other obvious pathology.

INTERSTITIAL CYSTITIS (ICS definition 2002)
PBS with typical cystoscopic and/or histological features in the absence of infection or other pathology.
